An exploration of surveillance methods used against activists, some tips for safer organising online and in real life, plus a call to action - hackers, please help activists stay safe on the Internet.
With multiple existential threats looming on the horizon, we need political activism and grassroots organising more than ever. As movements grow in power, inadequate policing, including targeted surveillance, becomes the norm even for explicitly nonviolent groups. Campaigns are going global, and pandemic restrictions make it impossible to meet in person, so much organising work is done online, using insecure personal devices. Those same computers are used to communicate on the ground, during actions. Moving communications online makes it easier to spy on activists, and disrupt their work. This talk will be an exploration of the different ways in which activists are being surveilled, followed by some tips for safer organising, and a call to action for the hacker community to support activists in their struggle.
